Crocheted Baby Set No. 1259

Materials:  5 1-ounce balls Bear Brand Babyfair or Bear Brand Wonderized Pompadour; Crochet hook # 1

NOTE:  An Alice Fowler fan made this set up.  Here are her suggestions from a 9/16/9 email, "While on vacation in Washington state I went to a Ben Franklin store and found some regular Bernat Baby yarn (not the Bernat Baby Soft yarn).  I made up AF 1259 in it using a 2 steel hook (I crochet loose) and it was beautiful!!!"

Gauge:  Chain 10 = 1 inch

NOTE:  Make all shells with 5 dc in back lp of stitch only.  All sc between shells in both loops of stitch.

Sacque:  Begin at neck.  Ch 85.

Row 1.  Dc in 7th st from hook, *ch 1, sk 1, dc in next,  repeat from *, turn.  (40 spaces.)

Row 2.  * Ch 5, sk 1 sp, sc in next dc, repeat from *, (40 loops) ch 3, turn.

Row 3.  2 dc in base of ch, sc in third st of next loop, * ch 5, sc in third st of next loop, repeat from * 9 times.  5 dc (shell) in next sc, (back loop only), sc in third st of next loop, repeat from * 2 times.  Make 9 more loops, end 3 dc (half shell) in last sc, ch 1, turn.

Row 4.  Sc in first dc, shell in next sc, sc in next loop, * ch 5, sc in next lp, repeat from * 8 times.  Shell in next sc, sc in next shell, shell in next sc, sc in next loop, 8 loops, 2 shells, 8 loops, 2 shells, 8 loops, end with shell in last sc, sc in last dc, ch 3, turn.

Rows 5, 7, 9, and 11.  Begin and end as for row 3.

Rows 6, 8, and 10.  Begin and end as for Row 4.  Each shell section, inc 1 shell each row, and each loop section decrease 1 loop each row.

Row 12.  Begin as row 4, shell across except make (sc, dc, sc) in third st of last loop of each loop panel.

Row 13.  Shells across to (sc, dc, sc) of previous row.  Shell in first sc, sc in dc, shell in next sc, and continue across in same pattern.

Row 14.  Make 5 complete shells.  * 5 dc in next sc.  Insert hook in third dc of next shell, sk 9 complete shells for sleeve, insert hook in third dc of next shell.  Make (sc, dc, sc) through both sts on hook at once *, 11 complete shells across back.  Repeat * to * above.  6 shells for other front.

Row 15.  Half shell, shells across, increase in (sc, dc, sc) as in row 13, ending with half shell.

Continue in shell pattern without increase until work measures 6 inches from underarm, ending on inside of work.

Border.  Without breaking yarn, make one row shells up left front edge, around nec, and down right front (working from inside).  Fasten off.

Sleeve.  Fasten yarn at underarm joining.  Make 12 shells around sleeve, end sc in starting st, sl st to third dc of next shell.  Turn.  Make another shell row, etc., until work measures 6 inches from underarm.

Cuff.  SC in second, third, and fourth dc of each shell.  Join.  Ch 4, sk 1 sc, * dc in next, ch 1, sk 1, repeat from *, ch 1, join.  Make 1 row shells from inside, join and fasten off.

Bonnet.  Begin at center back.  Ch 6, joining in ring.  Ch 3, 19 dc in ring.  Join to top of ch 3.

Row 2.  Ch 4, dc in next, * ch 1, dc in next, repeat from *, ch 1, join in third st of ch 4.

Row 3.  * Ch 5, sc in next dc, repeat from *, sl st to third st of next loop, turn.

Row 4.  Shell in first sc, * sc in next lp, (ch 5, sc in next lp) 4 times, shell in next sc, repeat from * around, join with sc to first sh, sl st to third st of shell, turn.

Row 5.  Shell in joining sc, ch 5 loops  in each of next 3 loops, 2 shells, 3 loops, 2 shells, 3 loops, 1 shell, join and turn as in row 4.

Rows 6 and 7.  Increase 1 shell in each shell panel.  Decrease 1 loop in each loop pattern.

Row 8.  20 shells.

Row 9.  20 shells and fasten off.

Row 10.  Begin short rows.  Count from center shell at tip of one loop panel (from inside) and join yarn in third dc of third shell to left.  Make 16 shells, ch 3, turn.

Row 11.  Half shell in base of ch, 15 shells, half shell.

Repeat rows 10 and 11 until bonnet measures 5 1/2 inches from center back.  Sc across lower front section, sc in each alternate st across back section, sc across other front.  Fasten off.

Frill (OPTIONAL).

Row 1.  Fasten yarn in first sc at lower right edge of 5th row from front.  Ch 5, sc in third dc of shell, ch 5, sc in sc between first and second shell, ch 5, sc in next shell, etc., across, ending in last sc of row.  Turn.

Row 2.  Sl st to center of loop.  Shell in next sc, * ch 5 loop in each of next 2 loops, shell in next sc, repeat from * across, ending sc in third st of last loop.  Turn.

Row 3.  Sl st to center of shell, shell in next sc, * ch 5 loop in next loop, shell in each of next (??) sc, repeat from * across, ending sc in center of last shell.  Turn.

Row 4.  Sl st to center of shell.  Shell in each sc across.  Fasten off.

Bootee.  Begin with sole and ch 20.

Row 1.  2 dc in 4th ch from hook, 1 dc in each of next 15, 5 dc in next, 1 dc in each of next 15 down opposite side of ch, 2 dc in last, join to top of 3-ch.

Row 2.  Ch 3, 2 dc in each of next 3, 1 dc in each of next 13, 2 dc in each of next 7, 1 dc in each of next 13, 2 dc in each of next 3, 1 dc in same st as 3-ch, join.

Row 3.  Ch 3, (1 dc in next, 2 dc in next) 3 times, 1 dc in each of next 14, (2 dc in next, 1 dc in next) 7 times, 1 dc in each of next 13, (2 dc in next, 1 dc in next) 3 times, 1 dc in same st as 3-ch, join.

Row 4.  Ch 3, 1 dc around the post of each dc, inserting hook from back, right to left, join.  (68 dc, counting 3-ch)

Rows 5 and 6.  Dc even.

Row 7.  Dc even.  Fasten off.

Instep.  Row 1.  Beginning with first st to left of 3-ch in center back, count on left side of shoe to 27th st.  Join yarn in this st, and with toe of shoe toward you, draw loop in same st.  Retaining all loops on hook, draw up lp in each of next 12 (13 total loops).  Work off as follows:  yo, through 1, * yo, through 2 *, repeat across.  The lp left on hook is always first st of next row.

Row 2.  Insert hook under second vertical bar, draw up loop.  Retaining all lps on hook, draw up lp in each vertical bar except last.  Now insert hook through last vertical bar and st directly behind it and draw up lp (13 loops).  Work off as for Row 1.  Make 6 more rows in same manner.

Row 9.  Draw up loop under second vertical bar, yo, through 2 (sc made).  Repeat across, ending with 1 loop on hook. 

Fasten instep in shoe as follows:  Catch remaining loop on hook into 15th st from center back on right side of shoe (do not count 3-ch) and with instep piece toward you, sc it st for st to right side of shoe.  2 sc at corner, sc across toe, inserting hook from right to left under each of the original 13 sts of instep, 2 sc at corner, sc instep and shoe together along left side, ending in 15th st from center back (do not count 3-ch).

Beading.  With toe of shoe facing you, ch 4, * sk 1, dc in next ch 1 *, repeat around, join to third st of ch 4 (23 dc).

Top.  Row 1.  * Ch 5, sc in second dc, repeat from * around, sl st to center of first loop, turn.

Row 2.  Shell in sc, sc in loop, * ch 5 loop in each of next 2 loops, shell in next sc, repeat from * around, ending with ch 5 in each of last 2 loops, sl st to center of shell, turn.

Follow pattern of frill for bonnet until bootee is desired height, about 6 rows.  Fasten off.

Edge all garments with Bucilla Crochelle.  * Ch 3, sl st in next, repeat from *.

Robe (or blanket).  Row 1.  Ch 301 loosely (multiple of 6 plus 1) to measure about 32 inches.  * Shell in 3rd st from hook, sk 2, sc in next, sk 2, repeat from *, end sc in last, ch 3, turn.

Row 2.  Half shell in base of ch, shells across.  End half shell in last, ch 1, turn.

Row 3.  Sc in first dc, shell in next sc, sc in next shell, etc across.

Repeat rows 2 and 3 until work measures 36 inches, ending with Row 2.  Turn.

Border.  Row 1.  Ch 5, sc in sc, * ch 5, sc in center of shell, ch 5, sc in sc, repeat from * across, end sc in last dc, work down side of blanket as follows:  Ch 5, sc in center of first dc of half shell, ch 5, sc in base of same dc, ch 5, sc in center of next dc, etc., ending sc in corner st.  Work across starting chain with ch 5, sc in same st as shell, ch 5, sc in same st as sc, etc.  Make last side same as first.

Row 2.  Sl st to center of loop, * ch 5, sc in center of next lp, repeat from * around, end in sl st.  Make as many rows loops as desired, with 2 loops in corner loop to keep work flat if necessary.

Last Row.  Sl st to center of loop, * shell in next sc, sc in center of next loop, ch 5, sc in next loop, repeat from * around.  Fasten off.

Edge all garments with Bucilla Crochelle * ch 3, sl st in next, repeat from * around.

Fasten off.  Use ribbons for ties.
