Crocheted Baby Set No. 1258

Materials:  4 1-ounce balls Bear Brand Babyfair or Bear Brand Wonderized Pompadour; Bone Crochet hook # 1

Gauge:  Chain 10 = 1 inch

Abbreviations:

Sacque:  Begin at yoke with first med.

Row 1.  Ch 5, join in ring, ch 3, 2 dc in ring, (ch 3, 3 dc in ring) 4 times, ch 3, join to top of first ch 3.

Row 2.  Ch 3, dc in each of 2 dc, retaining last 2 lps of each dc on hook, yo, through all lps at once (3 dc cluster), * ch 5, sl st in first st of ch, *ch 5, sl st under ch 3) twice, ch 5, 3 dc cluster in next 3 dc's, repeat from * around, joining last ch 5 to top of first cluster.

Row 3.  Sl st to second st of next ch 5, (ch 5, dc, ch 2, dc, ch 2, dc) under same ch 5, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch 5 lp, ch 1, continue around in same pattern, join to third st of first ch 5, ch 1.

Row 4.  Sc in same st as ch 1, * 2 sc under next ch 2, 5 sc under next ch 2, 2 sc under next ch 2, sc under ch 1, sc in each of 3 dc, sc under ch 1, repeat from *, ch 1, join, turn.

Row 5.  Sc in the sc under ch 1 pr, * tr in next sc, let it fall to back of work as you make sc in next sc (French Knot made---Fr K), repeat from * around.  This row is always made from the wrong side!

To join med:  Make 1 complete.  Make next till you reach second side on Row 5 and then make 1 sc after the corner Fr K, then remove hook, insert in corresponding sc of first med, draw dropped st (remove hook, insert in corresponding sc of first med, draw dropped st through, continue across side, joining sc's in 7 places in all, then complete med around without further joining.  Continue in this manner until you have joined 8 medallions, leaving 2 sides of each medallion free at outside edge of yoke.

Body.  Row 1.  Join yarn in corner Fr K at lower left edge of yoke, ch 3, ** sk 2 sc and 1 Fr K, (2 dc in next Fr K, ch 4, dc in first st of ch 4, dc in same st as first 2 dc---gr made), * (sk 2 sc and 1 Fr K, gr in next Fr K) twice *, (sk 1 sc, gr in next Fr K), twice, repeat * to *, sk 2 sc and 1 Fr K, make first 2 dc of gr in next Fr K and last one in next Fr K (where 2 med join) repeat from ** above, end dc in corner Fr K, ch 3, turn.

Row 2.  Gr under each ch 4 pr, making 3 dc instead of 2 in first step, end dc in top of ch 3, ch 3, turn.

Row 3.  Make 8 gr as for Row 2, join 9th and 23rd groups by making a gr through both ch 4's at once (armhole made), 17 gr, join the next gr to the 9th from the other front edge, make 8 gr across, end dc in top of ch 3, ch 3, turn.

Rows 4-7:  Gr in each gr across, end dc in top of ch 3, ch 3, turn.

Row 8.  For each gr, make 3 dc, ch 4, dc in lst dc, ch 1, dc in same st as first 3 dc.  (The extra ch 1 increases fullness).  Repeat this row until work measures 5 1/2 inches below underarm joining.  Fasten off.

Beading at neck:  Join yarn in corner Fr K of right front, ch 4, * dc in next Fr K, ch 1, repeat from * 5 times, ch 1, sk scorner Fr K's and repeat from first * across, dc in last corner Fr K, ch 1, turn.

Edge:  Fr K in each dc, sc under each ch 1 across.  Fasten off.

Join yarn at lower edge of yoke on right front and make Fr K edging around remainder of garment to lower edge of left yoke.  Fasten off.

Sleeve.  Fasten yarn at underarm joining, ch 3, work in pattern as for Row 2 of sacque, join to top of ch 3, ch 3, turn.  Repeat this row until sleeve measures 5 1/2 inches from underarm joining.

Cuff.  * 2 sc under ch 4, ch 1, repeat from *, join, make 1 row Fr K's (from wrong side).  Fasten off.

Bonnet.  Make 1 med complete (do not break yarn).

Row 1.  Ch 3, dc in base of ch, ch 4, dc in first st of ch 4, dc in base of ch 3, * sk Fr K and sc, gr in next Fr K (see Row 1 of sacque), (sk 1 sc, gr in next Fr K) twice, sk sc and Fr K, gr in next sc, sk (Fr K, sc, Fr K), gr in next sc, repeat from * around (25 gr), join to top of ch 3.  Break yarn.  Turn work.

Join yarn in center ch 4 at one corner, ch 3, work in pattern (Row 2 of sacque) on 21 gr, until work measures 5 1/2 inches from center back.  Fasten off.

Join yarn in end of first short row at left side, work across back of neck with ch 1, sc in ch 4, turn, make Fr K edge around entire bonnet.

Frill (OPTIONAL).

Fold first 3 rows at front to inside and work in folded edge as follows:  Join yarn in first ch 4, ch 7, dc in third st of ch, dc in ch 4, * ch 4, dc in first st of ch 4, dc in base of first ch 4, dc in next ch 4, repeat from * across, ch 3, turn.

Make 1 row of gr as for Row 1 of sacque, and finish with Fr K edge.

Bootee.  Begin with sole and ch 20.

Row 1.  2 dc in 4th ch from hook, 1 dc in each of next 15, 5 dc in next, 1 dc in each of next 15 down opposite side of ch, 2 dc in last, join to top of 3-ch.

Row 2.  Ch 3, 2 dc in each of next 3, 1 dc in each of next 13, 2 dc in each of next 7, 1 dc in each of next 13, 2 dc in each of next 3, 1 dc in same st as 3-ch, join.

Row 3.  Ch 3, (1 dc in next, 2 dc in next) 3 times, 1 dc in each of next 14, (2 dc in next, 1 dc in next) 7 times, 1 dc in each of next 13, (2 dc in next, 1 dc in next) 3 times, 1 dc in same st as 3-ch, join.

Row 4.  Ch 3, 1 dc around the post of each dc, inserting hook from back, right to left, join.  (68 dc, counting 3-ch)

Rows 5 and 6.  Dc even.

Row 7.  Dc even.  Fasten off.

Instep.  Row 1.  Beginning with first st to left of 3-ch in center back, count on left side of shoe to 27th st.  Join yarn in this st, and with toe of shoe toward you, draw loop in same st.  Retaining all loops on hook, draw up lp in each of next 12 (13 total loops).  Work off as follows:  yo, through 1, * yo, through 2 *, repeat across.  The lp left on hook is always first st of next row.

Row 2.  Insert hook under second vertical bar, draw up loop.  Retaining all lps on hook, draw up lp in each vertical bar except last.  Now insert hook through last vertical bar and st directly behind it and draw up lp (13 loops).  Work off as for Row 1.  Make 6 more rows in same manner.

Row 9.  Draw up loop under second vertical bar, yo, through 2 (sc made).  Repeat across, ending with 1 loop on hook. 

Fasten instep in shoe as follows:  Catch remaining loop on hook into 15th st from center back on right side of shoe (do not count 3-ch) and with instep piece toward you, sc it st for st to right side of shoe.  2 sc at corner, sc across toe, inserting hook from right to left under each of the original 13 sts of instep, 2 sc at corner, sc instep and shoe together along left side, ending in 15th st from center back (do not count 3-ch).

Beading.  With toe of shoe facing you, ch 4, * sk 1, dc in next, ch 1 *, repeat around, join to third st of ch 4.

Top.  Row 1.  * Ch 3 for first dc, make gr as for Row 1 of sacque, * sk 3, gr in next, repeat from * around, join to top of ch 3.

Work 3 rows of pattern as for Row 2 of sacque, finish with Fr K edge.  Fasten off.

Add ribbon ties in all garments.
