Knitted Baby Set No. 1253

Materials:  4 1-ounce balls Bear Brand Babyfair or Bear Brand Lullaby; 1 straight pair each US 1 and US 2 knitting needles and 1 set US 2 double point needles if desired for bootees

Gauge:  8 stitches per inch

With US 1 needles, cast on 66 sts.

Neck ribbing:  Row 1.  K 6, * p 2, k 2, repeat from * to last 8 sts, p 2, k 6.

Row 2.  P 6, * k 2, p 2, repeat from * to last 8 sts, k 2, p 6.

Rows 3 and 4:  Same as 1 & 2.

Row 5.  (Buttonhole row).  K 3, yo, k 2 tog, k 1, * p 2, k 2, repeat from *, end p 2, k 6.  (Make remaining buttonholes every 1 3/4 inches on knit row.)

Row 6.  Same as 2, except k yo as one st.

Rows 7 and 8.  Same as 1 and 2.

Begin Body:  Change to US 2 needles.

Row 1.  Work as follows, placing markers of contrasting yarn (M):  K 6, p 2, k 7, (inc in next, M, k 1, M, inc in next -- seam made), k 2, seam, k 20, seam, k 2, seam, k 7, p 2, k 6.

Row 2 and all even rows:  P 6, k 2, p each st across, slipping markers to right hand needle, end k 2, p 6.

Row 3.  Knit, keeping borders in pattern and inc in st before and after each marker.  Continue as for rows 2 and 3, until sleeve section measures 7 inches from seam to seam, ending with p row.  (Approximately 282 sts.)  K sts of left front, place on holder, k across left sleeve and leave yarn, place sts of back, right sleeve, and right front on separate holders.

Work left sleeve in stockinette st, dec 1 st at each end of row every inch (3 times).

Work even for 5 inches from underarm, dec to 38 sts, change to US 1 needles, and work k 2, p 2 ribbing for 3/4 inch.  Bind off in ribbing.

Work right sleeve to correspond.

Slip sts of left front on needle (point of needle toward sleeve), join yarn at second raglan seam, knit across sts of back and right front.  Keeping borders in pattern work stockinette st for 5 inches, change to US 1 needles and make k 2, p 2 ribbing for 1 1/4 inches.  Bind off in ribbing.

Sew sleeve seams.  Work 1 row of single crochet down each front edge and sew buttons in place.

Add lace and embroidery if desired.

Bonnet.  US 2 needles.  Cast on 90 sts, work in stockinette st for 1 1/4 inches, end with k row.  K next row to reverse stockinette st, work even 1/4 inch.  Make beading row as follows:  K 3, * yo, k 2 tog, k 6, repeat from *, end k 3.  Stockinette st for 4 1/2 inches, cast on 3 sts at beginning of next 2 rows (96 sts).

Dec for back as follows:

Row 1.  * K 2 tog, k 10, repeat from * across (88 sts).

Row 2.  Purl

Row 3.  * K 2 tog, k 9, repeat from * across (80 sts).

Row 4.  Purl.

Continue to decrease 8 sts every other row until 8 sts remain on needle.  Break yarn, leaving 5-6 inches to thread through the 8 sts.  Fasten and sew seams from center back to cast on sts.

Fold brim to place, and with US 1 needles, pick up 68 sts along neck edge, work 1/2 inch k 2, p 2 ribbing, bind off.

Single crochet across edge of brim, and add embroidery and lace as desired, and run ribbon through beading under brim.

Bootee.  Cast on 42 sts, k 2, p 2 for 1/2 inch.  Stockinette st for 1 1/2 inches.

Beading.  K 2 tog, yo, * k 1, k 2 tog, yo, repeat from * across, end k 1, purl back.

K 27, turn, with second and third needles, work stockinette over last 12 sts for 1 1/2 inches.  End with p row.  Break off, leaving sts on needle.  With right side facing, use first needle with 15 sts.  Join yarn, pick up and k 14 sts on right side of instep, with another needle, work across instep, with another needle, pick up and k 14 sts on other side of instep.  K remaining 15 sts from next needle (70 sts) and keeping work on 3 needles, work stockinette st for 1 inch, bind off 29, k 12, bind off 29.

Join yarn on center needle and work sole in stockinette st 3 inches, bind off.  Sew sole and back seams.  Add lace and embroidery if desired and run ribbon through beading.
