TO MAKE KNOT STITCH: * Draw up 1/2 inch lp in first sc, yo and through lp, insert hook under yarn at left of lp and make 1 sc closely (this is a half knot st or single knot st). Repeat from * once, sl st in next sc. These 2 half knot stitches (hks) make a complete knot stitch, sometimes called double knot stitch.
To turn at end of row, (unless other instructions are given), make 3 half knot stitches, sl st in center knot of first double knot stitch, continue across with double knot stitches.
Sacque: Begin at Neck. Ch 70.
Row 1. Dc in third st from hook, dc in each of next 11, (ch 3, dc in same st as last dc--corner), dc in each of next 11, corner, 21 dc, corner, 11 dc, corner, 12 dc, ch 3, turn.
Row 2. * Sk next dc, dc in next, dc in skipped st--X stitch made. Repeat from * 5 times, X st on first 2 sts of ch 3, ch 3, X st on last 2 sts of ch 3 (2 sts in one ch st), continue around in same pattern.
Follow pattern of Rows 2 and 3 twice, drop yarn. With separate yarn, join corners of yoke at underarms with ch 7. PATTERN WRITTEN AS "ROWS 2 AND 3", AND A FELLOW ALICE FOWLER PATTERN LOVER AGREES THIS SHOULD BE 'ROWS 1 AND 2'.
Body. Make * double knot stitch, sk 1 dc, sl st in next, repeat from * across. For very full skirt, sl st in each st, and for less fullness, sk 1 or 2 sts between. Work in knot stitch pattern for 6 inches. Fasten off.
Sleeve. Join yarn at center of underarm ch, and work as for first row of body. Do not join, but continue around and around until work measures 5 1/2 inches, ending at underarm side of sleeve with a half knot st. Make 30 sc in the sl sts around sleeve, join, ch 3, dc in each sc, and add frill of double knot sts in each dc around. Fasten off.
Trim front edges of yoke and neckline with knot st frills as desired.
Insert ribbon in first row of dc at neck.
Bonnet.
Ch 6. Join in ring.
Row 1. Ch 3, 17 dc in ring, join to top of ch 3, ch 3, turn.
Row 2. Dc in dc preceding ch 3, * ch 1, sk 1 dc, dc in next, dc in skipped st, repeat from *, ch 1, join to top of ch 3 (9 x stitches), ch 3, turn.
Row 3. * 2 dc in ch 1, dc in each of next 2 dc, repeat from *, end dc in first dc of last X, join to top of ch 3, ch 3, turn. (36 dc)
Row 4. Repeat row 2 (18 X sts)
Row 5. Repeat row 3 (72 dc)
Row 6. Same as row 2, except omit ch 1 between X's (36 X's).
Row 7. Dc in each dc (72 dc).
Row 8. 21 double knot stitches, sk 2 between, end sk 2, half knot stitch, dc in next.
Row 9. Double knot stitch across, ending half knot stitch, dc in base of first knot stitch from previous row.
Row 10. Double knot stitch across, ending half knot stitch in top of dc of previous row.
Continue in this pattern until bonnet measures 5 1/2 inches from center back. Fasten off.
Beading. Ch 5, dc in sl st, ch 3, dc in next sl st, etc., across, ch 5, turn * dc in dc, ch 3, repeat from * across. Double beading row back and run ribbon through both rows at one time.
Frill. Double knot stitch across, making first sl st in center of ch 3, next in dc, and repeat, turn and add one more row knot stitch. Make a row of half knot stitch across lower edge of bonnet and front edge of beading.
Bootee. Begin with sole. Ch 20.
Row 1. 2 dc in fourth ch from hook, 1 dc in each of next 15, 5 dc in next, 1 dc in each of next 15 down opposite side of ch, 2 dc in last, join to top of 3-ch.
Row 2. Ch 3, 2 dc in each of next 3, 1 dc in each of next 13, 2 dc in each of next 7, 1 dc in each of next 13, 2 dc in each of next 3, 1 dc in same st as 3-ch, join.
Row 3. Ch 3, (1 dc in next, 2 dc in next) 3 times, 1 dc in each of next 14, (2 dc in next, 1 dc in next) 7 times, 1 dc in each of next 13, (2 dc in next, 1 dc in next) 3 times, 1 dc in same st as 3-ch, join.
Row 4. Ch 3, 1 dc around the post of each dc, inserting hook from back, right to left, join. 68 dc, counting 3-ch.
Row 5. Ch 3, turn. Dc in st before ch 3, * sk 1, dc in next, dc in skipped st, repeat from *, join to top of ch 3, ch 3, turn.
Row 6. Dc even.
Row 7. Ch 3, turn. Dc in st before ch 3, * sk 1, dc in next, dc in skipped st, repeat from *, join to top of ch 3. Fasten off.
Instep. Join yarn in first dc of 15th X st on left side of shoe, ch 3 (work across toe), dc in next and in each of 10, ch 3, turn, 5 X's across, end dc in top of ch 3. Make these 2 rows once more and dc row again, join to first dc of ninth X from center back on right side of shoe, sc instep and shoe tog around toe, ending in last dc of ninth X from center back on left side of shoe.
Beading. Ch 4, * sk 1 st, dc in next, ch 1, repeat from * across instep and around, join to third st of ch 4. 23 dc, counting ch 4).
Make knot stitch row around, skipping 2 meshes each time until last. Do not join, but work as for sleeve until shoe is desired height. Fasten off.
