NOTE: This pattern uses a X stitch starting in Row 2 of sacque body that is not defined.
To make Roll Stitch:
Wrap yarn over hook the required number of times, according to instructions in pattern you are working, keeping yarn high on the hook to make the loops loose enough to draw hook through. Insert hook in desired st, yo, draw lp through st, yo, draw through all except last lp on hook (draw out to 1/2, 3/4, or 1 inch, according to pattern used), yo, through 2.
This is not a difficult stitch and a little practice will prove it. The beauty of the stitch will pay you for the practice.
NOTE: Roll stitch is always made from the front, or right side of work.
Sacque. Medallion for yoke: Row 1. Ch 6, join in ring, ch 4, * r st in ring (wrap 12 times, draw out 1/2 inch---see instructions above), ch 1, *, repeat * to * 15 times, join to top of ch 4.
Row 2. Sl st to ch 1, ch 5, dc in base of ch 5, * ch 3, sk 1 r st, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 4, sk next ch-1 sp, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 3, (dc, ch 2, dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch 1 *, repeat around, end ch 3, dc in base of ch 5, ch 2, join to third st of ch 5, fasten off.
2nd Medallion: Make same as first until you reach third corner, then make (dc, ch 1, dc) in ch 1, remove hook, insert in center dc at one corner of first med, draw lp dropped through, ch 2, dc in same st as last dc, drop lp, insert hook in corresponding dc of first med, draw lp through, ch 3, sc in ch 1 sp, ch 2, join to ch 4 of first med, ch 2, sk 1 ch-1 sp, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 3, dc in base of ch 5, join to first med as before, ch 2, join to third st of ch 5 and to first med. Fasten off.
Join 4 med in row across back, 1 med on each shoulder, and 2 on each side of front yoke.
Body: Row 1. Join yarn in dc at lower left center front corner of yoke, ch 4, (r st, ch 1, r st---wrap 8 times, draw out 3/8 inch) in ch-2 sp, * ch 2, 4 sc in next sp, ch 2, (r st, ch 1, r st) in next sp *, repeat across left front, ending 4 sc in last sp. Sl st into center dc of next corner of yoke, ch 2, * (r st, ch 1, r st) in next sp, ch 2, 4 sc in next *, repeat to center back, ( r st, ch 1, r st) in joining st, continue around in same pattern, ending dc in corner dc, ch 1, turn.
Row 2. * Sc in r st, ch 1, sc in r st, ch 1, yo twice, draw up lp in first sc, yo, through 2, yo, draw up lp in 4th sc, (yo, through 2) 4 times, ch 2, dc in center of X st (this st has various names, cross st, crest st, K st, etc., but for simplicity, we'll call it X st in this pattern) ch 1 * repeat across, ch 3, turn.
Row 3. (R st, ch 1, r st) under ch 1, ch 2, 4 sc under ch 2 (top of X), ch 2 *, repeat * to * across, dc in top of ch 1, ch 1, turn.
Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until work measures 6 inches below yoke. Fasten off.
Sleeve. Join yarn at underarm joining. Ch 3, 1 r st in first sp, ch 2, 4 sc in next, ch 2. Follow pattern for Row 1 of body, ending 1 r st in last sp. Join to top of ch 3, ch 1, turn.
Work in pattern, keeping 1 r st on each side of ch 3 as you join until sleeve measures 6 inches, ending with X st row.
Cuff. Row 1. Sc in r st, * sc in each dc of X, sc in each of 2 r sts *, repeat around. Join. (30 sc)
Row 2. Ch 3, r st in first sc, dc in next, r st in next, etc., around. Join.
Row 3. Edge row. Ch 2, * r st (wrap 8) in base of ch 2, sk 1, sl st in next, ch 2 *, repeat * to * around. Join and fasten off.
These r sts will curl down like picots!
Finish neckline as follows: Join yarn at lower right front corner of yoke, (work toward neckline) ch 2, sc in next sp, * ch 1, dc in next sp *, repeat to corner, 3 dc with ch 1 between in center dc of corner, same pattern to inside corner, yo, draw up lp in sp at one side of corner, yo, through 2, yo, draw up lp in sp at other side of corner, yo, through 2, yo, through 3, and continue around neck, and down other front edge of yoke ending sc in center dc of lower corner. Fasten off.
Add edge row as for cuff around entire sacque.
Bonnet. Row 1. Same as Row 1 of med for yoke, except make 18 r sts in ring, ch 1, turn.
Row 2. Sc in r st, * ch 2, X in next 2 ch-1, ch 2, (sc ch 1, sc) in r st *, repeat * to * around, ending sc in same st as first sc, sl st to join, ch 3, turn.
Row 3. R st in sc, * ch 2, 3 sc in top of X, ch 2, (r st, ch 1, r st) in next ch 1 *, repeat around, ending r st in last sc, join to top of ch 3.
Row 4. Same as Row 2 except ch 3 for top of X and make X in first and third sc's of previous row.
Row 5. Same as Row 3.
Row 6. Same as Row 4
Row 7. Same as Row 3, except 4 sc in top of X st.
Row 8. Same as Rows 4.
Row 9. Ch 3, r st in base of ch, ch 1, r st in sc, work around in pattern to 9th r st group, ch 1, dc in same st as last 2 r sts, ch 1, turn.
Work in pattern until bonnet measures 5 1/2 inches from center back.
Add edge row around entire bonnet.
Bootee. Begin with sole. Ch 20.
Row 1. 2 dc in 4th ch from hook, 1 dc in each of next 15, 5 dc in next, 1 dc in each of next 15 down opposite side of ch, 2 dc in last, join to top of 3-ch.
Row 2. Ch 3, 2 dc in each of next 3, 1 dc in each of next 13, 2 dc in each of next 7, 1 dc in each of next 13, 2 dc in each of next 3, 1 dc in same st as ch-3, join.
Row 3. Ch 3, (1 dc in next, 2 dc in next) 3 times, 1 dc in each of next 14, (2 dc in next, 1 dc in next) 7 times, 1 dc in each of next 13, (2 dc in next, 1 dc in next) 3 times, 1 dc in same st as ch 3, join.
Row 4. Ch 3, dc around spoke of each dc, inserting hook from back, right to left, join. (68 dc, counting ch 3)
Rows 5, 6, and 7. Dc in each dc, join each row at center back, and ch 3 for first dc of next row. Fasten off.
Instep. Row 1. Same as Row 1 of med, except 12 r sts, with ch 2 between, join to ch-3.
Row 2. (5 sc under next ch 2, 3 sc under each of next 2 chs) 4 times, join, sl st to third sc, catch remaining lp into 16th st on right side of shoe (do not count ch-3 at center back) and with instep med toward you, sc it to right side of shoe, 2 sc in corner st, sc across toe, 2 sc in corner, sc along left side of shoe, ending in 16th st from center back (counting ch 3 this time), ch 4, sk 1, dc in next, (ch 1, sk 2, dc in next) 3 times, (ch 1, sk 1, dc in next) around, join to third st of ch 4. (21 dc, counting ch 4).
Top. Row 1. Sc in first ch-1 sp, ch 2, sk 1 dc, X in next 2 dc, ch 2, sk 1 dc, (sc, ch 1, sc in next ch-1 sp), repeat around, ending sc in last sp, sl st to first sc, ch 3, turn.
Rows 2 & 3. Same as for bonnet. Add edge row. Fasten off.
Edge entire set: Ch 3, sl st in next, repeat. Add ribbons for ties.
