Crocheted Baby Boy's Cap and Girl's Beret No. 1193

Original Design by Alice Fowler, 10 1/2 E Pikes Peak, Colorado Springs, CO

Materials:  Bear Brand Casa Laine 1-2 ounce ball.  Bone Crochet Hook No. 2.  3 buttons for boy's cap.

Gauge:  Chain 8 = 1 inch

Baby Boy's Cap.

Row 1.  Ch 4, join in ring; ch 1, 5 sc in ring, join.

Row 2.  Ch 1, 2 hdc (To make hdc, yo as for dc, insert hook in st and draw up lp, yo, through all lps on hook) in each sc.

Row 3.  Ch 1, hdc in each of 2 sts, dc in first sc of first row, hdc in each of next 2 sts, dc in second sc of first row, etc around, ending dc in last sc of first row, join to ch 1.

Row 4.  Ch 1, * hdc in each of 3 sts, dc around the spoke of first dc in Row 3 *, repeat around, join.

Make 4 rows same as Row 4, inc 1 hdc between dc's in each panel.

Row 9.  Ch 1, hdc in each of 4, dc around third hdc of Row 6, hdc in each of 4, dc around spoke of dc around, join.

Row 10.  Same as Row 4 (10 hdc between dc ridges.)

Row 11.  Ch 1, hdc in each of 5, dc around spoke of center dc, hdc in next, dc around spoke of same center dc, hdc in each of 5, dc around spoke of next dc, continue around in same pattern.

Rows 12 and 13.  Same as Row 4, producing 14 and 15 hdc respectively.

Row 14.  Ch 1, hdc in each of 8, yo, around the first dc, yo through 2, yo, around spoke of second dc.  (yo, through 2) three times, hdc in each of 8 around.

Rows 15 through 23.  Same as Row 4, inc 1 dc in each panel (26 hdc).

Row 24.  Ch 1, hdc in 25, yo, insert hook as for hdc, draw up lp, yo, insert hook in next st, draw up lp, yo, through all sts on hook (dec made).  Continue around in pattern.

Make 2 more rows same as row 24.  Decrease in center of each panel.

Make 3 rows dec in center and omit one st on each side of dc.

Make 2 rows even (no dec).

Make last row sc in first, dc around next st 2 rows below, sc in next, dc around next as before (sk 1 st between dc's).  Join and Fasten off.

Visor.

Join yarn in edge immediately below a dec line, hdc across to next dec line, sl st in next, ch 1, turn.

Row 2.  2 hdc in first, hdc in each st to last, 2 hdc in last, sl st in next st of cap, ch 1, turn.

Row 3.  Hdc in each st, sl st in next 2 sts of cap, ch 1, turn.

Row 4.  Hdc in 3, 2 hdc in next, hdc across to within 4 sts of end of row, 2 hdc in next, hdc in each of 3, sl st in next 2 sts of cap, ch 1, turn.

Row 5.  Hdc in second sl st, hdc in each of 3, 2 hdc in next, hdc across and reverse pattern at other end of row, sl st in next 2 sts of cap, ch 1, turn.

Add 2 more rows in same pattern, and strengthen the edge by making a row of sl st around.  Fasten off.

Cover 3 buttons with sc and add a twisted yarn or ch st cord, knotted in center, across visor.

Baby Girl's Beret.

Row 1.  Ch 4, join in ring, ch 1, 6 sc in ring, join.  (Ch 1, turn, at end of each row, and take up back st only.  Join at end of each row.

Row 2.  2 sc in each st.

Row 3.  * 2 sc in first, 1 sc in next * , repeat around.

Rows 4 through 30.  Make 2 sc in first of each 2 sc of preceeding row, 1 sc in all others, making one additional sc in each row between increases.

Rows 31 through 38.  Work even.

Rows 39 through 45.  Decrease every sixth st (insert hook in first as for sc, insert in next as for another sc, yo, through all 3 lps).

Make 1 row of sl st around edge and fasten off.

Make center trim of button, pompon, or cord.
