Crocheted Baby Set No. 1181

Materials:  5 1-ounce balls Bear Brand Babyfair.   Bone Hook #1.

Gauge:  Chain 10 = 1 inch

Abbreviations:

Sacque.  Row 1.  Ch 55, sc in each st (54 sc).  Work in slipper st (sc in every st, taking up back lp only) for 21 more rows.  Work over 18 sts for 5 rows.  Increase at neck 1 st each row until 30 sts.  Work even for 6 more rows.  Fasten off. 

Sk 18 sts at neck.  Make opposite front yoke to correspond.  Do not break yarn this time.  With separate yarn, join corners of yoke at underarms with ch 7 between.   Continue with main yarn as follows: 

Row 1.  Sc over 10 sts, * ch 1, turn.  Sc over 10 sts (back lp only), ch 1, turn.  Sc over 10 sts, 4 dc (shell) in same st of yoke as last sc, sk 1 sc, (sc in next, ch 2, shell in next sc, sk 1) twice, sc in each of next 10 *, repeat * to * around, end sc in last 10 sc of yoke.  Ch 1, turn.  (7 shell groups, 8 sc panels).

Row 2.  Sc over 10 sts, (ch 1, turn, sc over 10) twice, * 4 dc in sc just preceding first shell, sc in fourth dc of shell, (ch 2, shell in next sc, sc in fourth dc of shell) twice, sc over 10 *, repeat * to * across, ch 1, turn.

Row 3.  Same as Row 1, except make first shell of each group in sc just preceding first shell of previous row.

Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until work measures 6 1/2 or 7 inches from yoke, ending with Row 2.

Sleeve.  Row 1.

Join yarn at underarm, ch 3, 3 dc in same st, sk 3, * sc in next, ch 2, sk 2, 4 dc in next, sk 3 *, repeat around, end ch 2, join to top of ch 3.  Turn at end of each row.

Row 2.  * Ch 2, 4 dc in next sc, sc in fourth dc of shell *, repeat * to * around.

Repeat pattern until sleeve measures 6 1/2 or 7 inches. 

NOTE:  If you wish sleeve to puff, change sk 3 to sk 2, making 9 shells instead of 8 and continue in pattern.

Cuff.  Sc in 3 sts of each shell and 2 or 3 more sts at underarm side to make about 30 sts.  Slipper st for 3 or 4 rows.  Edge cuff in main yarn with * ch 2, 2 dc in base of same ch, sk 1 st, sc in next *, repeat around.  Use same edge for entire sacque.

Bonnet.  Row 1.  Ch 6, join in ring, ch 3, 13 dc in ring (14 dc with ch 3), join.

Row 2.  Ch 3, 2 dc in each dc.

Row 3.  * Ch 2, 2 dc in next, sc in next *, repeat around.

Row 4.  Ch 3, dc in same st, sc in second dc of shell, ch 2, 2 dc in sc, sc in second dc of shell, etc., around.

Make 4 rows with 3 dc in each shell.

Make 4 rows with 4 dc in each shell.

Omit 2 shell sections for back of neck and work in pattern over 12 sections for 13 rows.

* Sc in each of 3 dc, hdc (yo, draw up lp as for dc, yo, and through 3 at once) in next, dc in sc *, repeat across.  Work 14 rows of slipper st to turn back for brim.  Sc across lower edge of bonnet, drawing to shape by skipping occasional sts.

Edge as for sacque.

Bootee.  Begin with sole.  Ch 20.

Row 1.  2 dc in fourth ch from hook, 1 dc in each of next 15, 5 dc in next, 1 dc in each of next 15 down opposite side of ch, 2 dc in last, join to top of 3-ch.

Row 2.  Ch 3, 2 dc in each of next 3, 1 dc in each of next 13, 2 dc in each of next 7, 1 dc in each of next 13, 2 dc in each of next 3, 1 dc in same st as 3-ch, join.

Row 3.  Ch 3, (1 dc in next, 2 dc in next) 3 times, 1 dc in each of next 14, (2 dc in next, 1 dc in next) 7 times, 1 dc in each of next 13, (2 dc in next, 1 dc in next) 3 times, 1 dc in same st as 3-ch, join.

Row 4.  Ch 3, 1 dc around the spoke of each dc, inserting hook from back, right to left.  Join.  (68 dc, counting 3-ch).

Make 6 rows slipper st.

Row 11.  Ch 3, yo, draw up lp in first dc, insert hook in next dc and draw up lp, yo, through 3, yo, through 2 (dec dc made), dc in each dc until last 2, make dec dc, join and fasten off.  This is center back (66 dc).

Instep.  Beginning with first st to left of 3 ch in center back, count on left side of shoe to 27th st.  Join yarn in this st and with toe of shoe toward you, draw lp in same st.  Sc in same st and across 12 sts.  Ch 1, turn.  Work slipper st over these 13 sts for 10 more rows, ending at right side of shoe. 

Fasten instep in shoe as follows:  Catch remaining lp on hook into 15th st from center back on right side of shoe (do not count 3-ch) and with instep piece toward you, sc it to right side of shoe, 2 sc at corner, sc across toe, inserting hook from right to left under each of the original 13 sts of instep, 2 sc at corner, sc instep and shoe tog along left side, ending in 15th st from center back (count 3-ch).

Beading.  With toe of shoe facing you, ch 4, * sk 1 st, dc in next, ch 1 *, repeat across instep, ending in same 15th st where you began joining instep to shoe, ch 1, sk 1 st, dec dc in next 2 sts, ch 1, repeat * to * (above) 11 times, sk 1 st, dec dc in next 2, ch 1, join to third st of 4-ch (21 dc, counting 4-ch).

Top.  Ch 2, sk 1 st, shell (4 dc) in next, sk 2, sc in next, ch 2, sk 2 st, shell in next, repeat pattern around (7 shell groups), join.  Turn.  Make 5 more rows in pattern.

Edge as for sacque.
